THE report of the coroner of Cook County, which ispractically Chicago, shows that out of 790 violentdeaths the past six months, 20 were directly or indirectlytraceable to the operation of street cars, and of these alarge majority were cases in which no blame could pos-sibly be attached to the company. The loss of only onepassenger in each 5,000,000 transported, under the con-ditions which intoxicated, ignorant and criminally reck-less persons impose on the street railway carrier; andagainst whom there is no protection for the company orthemselves, is a surprisingly small record. The wonderis how in our large cities accidents are so few rather thanthat they are numerous as the records show.
