Men havefounded industries andperished in poverty, buthere is a life that founda full fruition of earlytoils and pains. The early part of thiscentury, whose geniusmarks its children, andthe costmopolitan influ-ences exerted on Mr.Stephensons impres-sionable years may havehad more effect than weare now able to trace.In relation to this it maybe stated that July 4,i8o9,was John Stephen-sons birthday and County Armagh his natal place, whilehis father, James Stephenson, was an Englishman and hishis mother a Scotch woman. In 1811 the familyremoved to New York and here John Stephensonreceived an essentially American training. YoungStephenson passed his school days at the WesleyanSeminary in New York city, and afterwards, in obedi-ence to his fathers wish, mounted the merchantile officestool to learn the theory of merchandising. Mr.Stephenson was at this time 19 years of age. The twoyears that he remained in Wades shop were busy ones,for after the days work the young coach builder spent his evenings studyingmechanical drawing anddesigning. Andrew Brower,who was owner of thepioneer stage line ofNew York, havingstarted his line in 1827,was Wades chiefpatron in repair workand naturally met thecoachmakers assistantin his professional duties.Brower quickly recog-nized the youths abili-ties and persuaded theyoung man to leave hisemplo3er and beginbusiness on his own ac-count.
