The operation of electric cars over grades of more than 6per cent has always been a source of anxiety to street rail-way managers during the fall and winter months, andinstances of cars sliding on grades of less than 6 per centare not uncommon ; but few serious accidents have, how-ever, resulted. Different mechanical devices have beendesigned and used, and in fact are being used at the presenttime; such devices as inclined planes, rack-rail sys-tems, counterweight systems and cable railways, each hav-ing its advocates.
