The first car crew prepare the rails for welding,and is followed at a short distance by the second, whichis called the compressor car and carries an hydraulicpump, working the compressor clamps operated by aheavy cylinder four feet long and 20 inches diameter.Ninety tons pressure is ordinarily the maximum employedalthough the machine has a rated capacity of 200 tons.This car is a self propeller, having two 25-horse-powermotors, and travels on the completed track. The thirdcar is the welder, a massive box carried on 4-wheeltrucks weighs 32 tons. At one end is the 250-horse-power motor ; at the other end the bolster and crane.The contact points are kept from unduly heatino- by aconstant stream of cold water pumped by a one-horse-power motor, and drawn from four tanks; two under andtwo within the car.
