  • Exhibit caption (2014): Force of Nature. Among Rembrandt's landscape etchings, this one is remarkable in a number of ways. While others often feature clear skies, here there is a volatile sense of shifting rain, clouds, air, and light. Composition and title emphasize three closely-grouped trees and careful looking reveals such further details as a couple fishing to the left, another couple concealed in the underbrush on the right, and a tiny artist sketching in the distance beyond them. This is also the largest of Rembrandt's landscape etchings and widely considered one of his greatest. There are over 200 Rembrandt etchings in the Library's collection of fine prints which currently includes about 100,000 works, dating from the 15th century forward.
