It was thegreatest experience of my whole life. The climbingwas harder work than I ever imagined, and it fright-ened one a little sometimes to climb around thosesteep places near the summit. But it was inexpressiblygrand. And the view! Oh, that view! But wasntit mean of Billy to leave us and come down first? What was the matter? Was the altitude too muchfor him? **Billy! Isnt he with you? He—he—isnt here, faltered Mrs. Jefferson. Oh! cried Aunt Jane. He must be here! Wesaw him start back ahead of us, and we didnt catchup with him—we did not see him again. He—hemust be here! Aunt Janes face paled. She clasped her hands andran back to the approaching guide. Mrs. Jeffersonran into the hotel to find Uncle Tom. It was true. FJiolograph by W. T. Parke Hallett Peak in July. A typical Rocky Mountain Gorge 40 THE TOP OF THE CONTINENT ahead of the party. The day had been overcast.Snow was falling fast before they left. The guide sawhis footprints for a few hundred yards, when they be-came confused with others. The guide shouted forhim, and Aunt Jane expected every minute to over-take him, but she did not doubt that he had safelyreached the hotel. The guide was plainly disturbed, but others of ex-perience pointed out that no person ever had beenlost or injured during the ascent of Longs Peak.Nevertheless, the Jeffersons were greatly alarmed, and, when Uncle Billy did not return at eight oclock, the guide was engaged to return over the trail andsearch for him. Uncle Tom insisted on accompany-ing him. There was little sleep that night for the grown-ups.Several volunteers walked a few miles up the trail withthe guide and Uncle Tom. But it was morning beforeUncle Tom returned, nearly exhausted. They hadfound no sign
