In the tropical regions of theglobe there are large ant lions, whose great wings are spottedwith brown and black, belonging to the genus Palparcs. One ofthese is also found in Provence, and is called the Dragon Fly Ant THE NEMOPTERA CO A. 361 Lion (Palparcs lihcHuIoidcs), and it is represented in the engravingon the opposite page. There is a little grou() of Nciiroptcra belonging to the tribe 362 TRANSFORMATIONS OF INSECTS. of which the ant Hons are characteristic forms ; they constitutethe genus AscalapJius, aad they are very pretty insects, whichare not unHke some of the Lepidoptcra. They have long antennae, which terminate in a large club-shaped end, like those of thegenus Argynnis; their wings are very prettily tinted, and areusually of a bright yellow colour, with black markings. Manyof them are to be found in Southern Europe, and their larvae, whose habits are unknown, resemble those of the ant lions.
