Theirboundaries on this side werepartially restricted by thePhilistines, who held the lowlands and strong cities alongthe shore. (Gen. x. 19.) Be-sides the possessions of theIsraelites, the land of Canaanembraced Phenicia on thenorth, and Philistia on thesouth-west. (Zeph. ii. 5.) The country was entered bythe Israelites on the east side,at a point of the Jordan op-posite Jericho. The tribes ofGad and Reuben and half thetribe of Manasseh had select-ed possessions for themselveson the east of Jordan, from theconquests which had beenmade on their march. Thenatives of the country were,for the most part, subduedafter a succession of severestruggles, (Num. xxxiii. 51—56,) and their territory wasdivided among the tribes andfamilies of the Israelites ac-cording to their numbers.This apportionment was madeby what would be called, inmodern phrase, a board ofcommissioners, consisting of129

The accompanying mapshows the supposed positionextent, and divisions of theland of promise, so far asthey can be ascertained fromthe sacred history. The lengthfrom north to south was lessthan one hundred and eightymiles, and the width did notexceed seventy-five miles.
