Had he been unhampered by the pre-vailing prejudice against the volunteer; had rank and commandbeen accorded to him as his developing merits warranted, andstrict justice required, the war would have been considerablyabbreviated in duration, and the personnel of its great actorswould have been somewhat changed. With enthusiastic warmth General Logan has applauded theservices of General Henry Knox, the great artillerist of the Revo-lution as well as the first War Secretary of the new nation; andhe has closed his eulogy with a tribute to the latters characterboth beautiful and just. In concluding this memoir no morefitting summary of the character of John A. Logan can be foundthan that embraced in the words that he has applied to GeneralKnox : He was an American volunteer, a distinguished soldier, aneminent statesman, and an admirable civilian. No more fascinating theme than that presented bythe citizen of the United States, when, leaving the pur-suits of peaceful life, he arrays himself in the garb ofthe soldier and takes the field in defense of country andprinciple, can be found in any chapter of the w^orldshistory.
