For two hours my wife and I had sat withinlistening to the whispering voices of the dead, voiceswhich are so full of earnest life, and of desperate en-deavours to pierce the barrier of our dull senses. Theyhad quivered and wavered around us, giving us petnames, sweet sacred things, the intimate talk of theolden time. Graceful lights, signs of spirit power hadhovered over us in the darkness. It was a differentand a wonderful world. Now with those voices stillhaunting our memories we had slipped out into thematerial world—a world of glaring iron-works and oftwinkling cottage windows. As I looked down on itall I grasped my wifes hand in the darkness and Icried aloud, My God, if they only knew—if they couldonly know! Perhaps in that cry, wrung from myvery soul, lay the inception of my voyage to the otherside of the world. The wish to serve was strong uponus both. God had given us wonderful signs, and theywere surely not for ourselves alone. (16)

HOW THIS BOOK WAS WRITTEN. THE WANDERINGS OF A SPIRITUALIST I had already done the little I might. From themoment that I had understood the overwhelming im-portance of this subject, and realised how utterly itmust change and chasten the whole thought of theworld when it is whole-heartedly accepted, I felt itgood to work in the matter and understood that allother work which I had ever done, or could ever do,was as nothing compared to this. Therefore, from thetime that I had finished the history of the Great Waron which I was engaged, I was ready to turn all myremaining energies of voice or hand to the one greatend. At first I had little of my own to narrate, andmy task was simply to expound the spiritual philosophyas worked out by the thoughts and experiences ofothers, showing folk, so far as I was able, that thesuperficial and ignorant view taken of it in the ordinarynewspapers did not touch the heart of the matter.
