Arkansas River, right side;—and town of NA-POLEON, Situated immediately at and below the mouth of Arkansas river; thisis a flourishing little place andbidsfairto become a town of importance.This river, from which the Arkansas Territory takes its name, is, nextto Missouri, the largest western tributary of the Mississippi. Thelength of this mighty stream, which is said to meander a long dis-tance in the Rockey Mountains, following its courses, is about 2000miles. KM MAP NO. 12.—MISSISSIPPI RIVER. atmosphere absorb the water to such a degree, that in many seasonsit may be forded many hundred miles below the mountains. Someof its tributaries are so impregnated with salt, as to render even thewaters of the main stream unpotable. The alluvial earth along itsbanks contains so much salt, that cattle are said sometimes to be killedby eating it. To the distance of about 400 miles from its mouth, ithas many lakes and bayous. In the spring floods, steam boats canascend it nearly to the mountains. Little Rock, or Ackropolis, is situated about 300 miles, by thecourse of the river, and about 120 by land, above the mouth of theArkansas. It is a military post, and the seat of government for theterritory. It stands on the south bank, on a very high stone bluff, andhas been ironically named Little Rock, from the prodigious size andmasses of rock about it. The situation is healthy and pleasant, andbeing the metropolis, a considerable village has grown up here
