The town is singularly situated on theshelving declivity of high hills, and the houses are scattered in groupson the terraces, it contains about 5000 houses 40,000 inhabitants. About two miles and a half below Vicksburgh, is a large bar on theleft. Channel to the right. 112 MAP NO. 15—MISSISSIPPI RIVER. No. 106, or Palmyra Island. This island lies near the left shore. It is about two miles and a halflong. Channel well over to the right shore in the bend. CARTHAGE Landing, right side Second Palmyra Island.,.^ Channel to the right, in low water. There is another island almostadjoining the foot of this island, called the Third, or Lower Palmyraisland, which is larger than the Second. If you go to the left of theSecond Palmyra island, you must keep to the left of the Third. Ifyou go to the right of the Second, take the right of the Third of course. POINT PLEASANT, right side This is the first point on the right after you pass Palmyra islands. No. 110, or Big Black Island, Lies in the middle of the river about a mile below Point Pleasant.Channel, at low water, to the left; but the right is preferable at amiddling stage of water.
