d, as the antelope has a keen nose for smells, and can detect thewhite man a long distance off, provided the wind is blowing in the rightdirection. The antelope has three protections—his sharp sight, his deli-cate nose, and his swift legs; and when these fail he has a womans argu-ment—tears. The antelopes eye is large, full, and lustrous ; and his gazeis soft as that of a young girl. When he is wounded or suffering heweeps, and it requires a man of strong nerve to look unmoved upon thedying struggles of an antelope, or his agony in disease. The flow oftears is copious, and there is something very human about the appearanceof the animal when calamity has overtaken him. They approached a ridge, and the guide, who was in advance, motion-ed thorn to stop. They dismounted, and, leaving their horses in chargeof a couple of the men, the hunters crept to the summit. Peering cau-tiously over, the boys saw something that was decidedly new to their eyes. THE YOUNG NIMHODS. HERD OF ANTELOPES.

In an undulating valley, broken by a few narrow chasms, a herd ofantelopes were feeding, and quite unconscious that anybody was observ-ing them. There were hundreds of them: Harry thought there mightbe thousands; and while some nibbled the herbage, others stood withtheir noses in the air, and had evidently satisfied their appetites. Far asour friends could see along the valley the herd extended, and the boyswere ready to believe the assertion of the guide that there was no endof antelope in the neighborhood. George called attention to the factthat each antelope had hoisted a flag of truce, and evidently wanted tobe let alone. The Doctor explained that Nature has painted the rump ofthe antelope white, and made the rest of the body a reddish gray.
