STAMPEDE OF HORSES AND MULES IX A STOKM. unknown in the Eastern States. They generally come from the north,and are severely cold, and the old plainsmen tell frightful stories of theireffects. They are most to be dreaded when they occur in winter, as theyare accompanied by snow, and cause heavy losses of stock. Captain Marcyonce encountered one of these storms on the divide, or ridge, between thePlatte and Arkansas Rivers. It lasted for sixty hours, and its fury was sogreat that it was impossible for him or any of his men to face the blast ofwind and snow. A drove of his horses and mules stampeded during thestorm, and ran fifty miles before they stopped. Three of the herdsmentried to follow them, but only went a short distance; only one of themfound his way back to camp, and that after great suffering.
