Summary[edit]

Description
English: Thicket near The Hangs This area is rich in tumuli, and some are hidden in the thicket that grows in the fork between Wood Lane and Bridge Road. There are nine large mounds, including ThreeHalfpenny Hill, Three Farthing Hill, and Gallow Hill (the latter in Kelling parish) and many smaller mounds, including a cluster of over thirty, which make Salthouse Heath the largest Bronze Age cemetery in Norfolk. All are scheduled Ancient Monuments.

A tumulus (plural tumuli, from the Latin word for mound or small hill) is a mound of earth and stones that has been raised over a grave. Tumuli, also called barrows, burial mounds or kurgans, can be found in many countries. When composed largely or entirely of stones they are usually referred to as cairns.
