est to her hand, which happenedto be the Goats beard. But the beard seemed to melt awayas she touched it, and she found her-self sitting quietly under a tree, whilethe Gnat (for that was the insect shehad been talking to) was balancing 51 THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS itself on a twig just over her head, andfanning her with its wings. It certainly was a very large Gnat, about the size of a chicken, Alicethought. Still, she couldnt feel ner-vous with it, after they had been talk-ing together so long. -then you dont like all insects?the Gnat went on, as quietly as if noth-ing had happened. I like them when they can talk,Alice said. None of them ever talkwhere I come from. What sort of insects do you rejoicein where you come from? the Gnatinquired. I dont rejoice in insects at all,Alice explained, because Im ratherafraid of them—at least the large kinds. But I can tell you the names of someof them. Of course they answer to theirnames? the Gnat remarked, carelessly. I never knew them do it.52

No use to them, said Alice; butits useful to the people that namethem, I suppose. If not, why do thingshave names at all? I cant say, the Gnat replied. Farther on, in the wood down there, theyve got no names—however, go onwith your list of insects; youre wast-ing time. Well, theres the Horse-fly, Alicebegan, counting off the names on herfingers. All right, said the Gnat. Half-way up that bush youll see a Rocking-horse-fly, if you look. Its made entire-ly of wood, and gets about by swingingitself from branch to branch. What does it live on? Alice asked, with great curiosity. Sap and sawdust, said the Gnat.Go on with the list. 53
