Tokatlıyan Hotel, located in Beyoğlu on İstiklal Street, was opened in 1897 by Mıgırdiç Tokatlıyan, an Armenian who had moved from Tokat to İstanbul. The building was designed by architect Alexander Vallaury. Originally named Hotel Splendide, the institution later took the name M. Tokatlıyan. During the 1920s this hotel was the second most important in the city after the famous Pera Palace. In 1946 it was sold and took the name Konak. Shortly after, because it was neglected, the building fell into disrepair and the owner Üç Horan Armenian Church had the hotel tenants evicted. In 1950 the building was converted into an office block and lost its original features and function. Today the building still exists in a neglected state, comprising legal firms and other offices.
