ck during the past year. Thework, though entirely unassisted, except by oc-casional visits from the pastor of the WrangelChurch, and by one visit from Mr. Marsden, isproving itself to be wonderfully permanent. Whatdoes this phenomenon suggest? Does it notsuggest the value of Salvation Army methods forpioneer mission work ? Bishop Ridley, of theChurch of England, has long recognized the valueof it, and as a consequence, has organized what isknown as the church army, which has done muchvaluable pioneer work. There are two methods ofcarrying on pioneer work. One is to attract atten-tion by gifts, and the other is to do that which ap-peals to the imagination of the native. Sol wasvery good to us. Here we have our first view of a tide waterglacier—the Hutli, or Le Conte Glacier, at the endof Thunder Bay, northeast of the town. Thisdazzling iceberg is a magnificent spectacle, reflect-ing the rays of the sun from myriads of sparklingpoints, as it stretches outward from a deep canon, surrounded by stately forest trees. It presents apure white surface, half a mile in width, and manymiles in length, and contains numberless deepfissures. Its icy cliffs rise from one hundred to twohundred feet above the waters of the bay, and asthe glacier advances, moving, it is said twenty-seven feet a day, they constantly break into hugeblocks and fall crashing down into the waters ofthe bay, forming serious obstacles to navigation. The natives believe that the mountains
