The nu-merous islands, large and small, by which we aresurrounded, are very beautiful with their statelyforests, rich verdure, and indented shores. Here adeep cavern extends into the base of the mountain,and at its mouth is an isolated log cabin. No othersigns of human life are visible. This strait is forty miles in length, and curves ina great bow as it sweeps along from ChathamStrait to Salisbury Sound. The name given to it bythe natives is Koo-le-tchika, or a dangerous chan-nel. Portions of the strait are swept by strongtidal currents, and beyond the Lower Rapids, wherethe channel is scarcely a hundred yards in width,the tide rushes in with the strength and swiftnessof a cataract.
