Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Trackside at Ashburys Just West of Ashburys someone has chalked 35 1/2 on the side of the track.

I asked on the Geograph Discussion Forum, if anyway knew what it meant.

Nigel Cox https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/2798 suggested that the 35 1/2 is a dimension of 3 feet and 5 1/2 inches, possibly an old design distance from the structure at the side of the track to the nearest running rail to maintain a safe clearance for rolling stock whilst Stephen McKay https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/1621 confirms that these marks will have been left by the permanent way engineers for their own information relating to track measurements. Stephen Craven https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/6597 adds that it might be 35.5 chains. Chainages are still used on the railways (80 chains to the mile) and a track diagram book gives Ashburys West Junction as 1 mile 30 chains from Piccadilly, so the 35 would be about right if this is about 100 yards east of the junction. This sounds about right to me.

The industrial units are on Kay Street.
