On faisait passer directement les pièces durant quel-ques minutes dans un bain chauffé à 50°, qui renfermait une trèsfaible quantité de chlorure de chaux, mais quon remplaçait avecavantage par une solution de chlorure de soude , quon obtenaiten ajoutant à une dissolution de chlorure de chaux la quantitéde carbonate sodique nécessaire pour en précipiter toute la chaux. JL16. Violet teint et passé en chlorure de chaux.

Cétait à lopérateur à déterminer la durée de cette opération ,qui, poussée trop loin , dégradait le violet, et dans le cas con-traire nécessitait des passages au savon non moins préjudi-ciables. On peut voir par léchant. 116, quen sortant du chlore,le blanc du fond est déjà dépouillé et la nuance plus pure, maisaffaiblie. On serait arrivé plus sûrement au but en imprégnant lespièces dune solution de chlorure de chaux assez affaiblie pourquil fût pour ainsi dire impossible den déterminer le titre,et en les abandonnant alors à elles-mêmes pendant quelquesheures ; le chlore, par son action, en aurait blanchi peu à peule fond sans fatiguer la couleur.
