I fear that the builders cannot be looked uponas wise master builders, for, if we examine the plan, weshall find that the piers are extremely small in proportionto the weight they were intended to carry; the N.E. pierhas a superficial area of only 34 feet, a portion of whichconsists of the respond to the 13th century western bay of1 See Plate III.
