Text Appearing Before Image:
ST. NICHOLAS/GLOUCESTER. ii6 Transactions for the Year igoo. In 1783 thespire showed such signs of weakness that theupper part was removed to the level of the band of quatre-foils, and the present corona, with gilded balls and weather-cock, formed as a finish to it. This work was executed byJohn Bryan, a Gloucester builder, at a cost of £110, and theold materials. A beautiful design has been spoiled through the want ofconstructive ability and forethought on the part of thebuilders; they would have done better if, in the first place, they had shored up the western arch, removed the respond, formed a larger and more homogenous foundation for thetower pier, and omitted the useless north archway to thetower.
Text Appearing After Image:
ST. NICHOLAS, GLOUCESTER.CHANCEL FROM SOUTH AISLE, SHEWING HAGIOSCOPES, &c. During the 15th century, also, the hagioscopes or squintswere formed in the north and south walls of the chancel, inorder to give a view of the celebration of mass at the highaltar from the chantry chapels. St. Nicholas Church, Gloucester. 117
