RSET.To Messrs. Frost and Reed, Bristol. Gentlemen,—I have made a thorough examination of the mostinteresting painting in Winsham Church, and find that, althoughit is in a most deplorable condition, there is happily enough oforiginal paint left to ensure, if wished, the complete restoration ofthe work. It is, I should think, of the latter end of the 15thcentury, judging by the costumes of the two female figures, especially noting the hanging lapels on the sleeves and the wimpleof the Virgin; also, the arrangement of the drapery around thenecks and shoulders of both the figures proclaim the pictureEnglish work of that date. The care shown in the attempt to realise the anatomy of theother three figures is surprising for so early a work; the bosomsand nipples, together with the short ribs and the abdomen, aredrawn with fair correctness; and the arrangement of the hair andbeards is done with good feeling for expression and balance. 1 Cardwell, Documentary Annals, i. 357. ^ ibj^,^ i. ^gS,

Face 94. i Report on the Painting in St. Stephens Church. 95 Unfortunately the central figure has suffered the worst. Thedrawing of the chest and lower part of throat, I fear, is entirelygone, and the feet are barely distinguishable. The crown of thornsis discernible, and the blood therefrom; also the drops of bloodfrom the spear-thrust; but the wound itself I could not be certainof unless the picture was cleaned. The Rev. D. H. Spencer says that the general opinion ofantiquarians is, that the picture originally came from a monasticestablishment (say Ford Abbey), and was cut into the arch over therood; but I venture to suggest that the painting was painted forthe position and shape. My opinion Ibase on the general designof the picture, for there is no evidence of other figures at the side,or of any objects by which the composition would be extended. But I think most conclusive of all is the drawing and balance of thebackground, which was evidently a conventual landscape withhillocks an
