Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Trees by the Shropshire Union Canal near Wheaton Aston, Staffordshire. This long stretch of tree-lined canal is through the Stretton Spoil Banks. The canal was opened in 1835 as the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, engineered by Thomas Telford. He took the most direct route possible at the time, so there are many long cuttings and embankments, which were problematical. However, this shortened the distance a contour hugging cut would have provided, and also reduced the need for locks. Railways were taking trade from the canals at this time, so every saved hour for the working boats mattered.
