Summary[edit]

Description
English: Trent and Mersey Canal at Shardlow Lock, Derbyshire. Shardlow Lock (No 2) is between the cottages. The first six locks from Derwent Mouth (the end of the canal) to Stenson are wide locks capable of accommodating two seven foot wide narrow-boats side by side. The maximum beam for boats on this section of the canal is ten feet because of other restraints. The canal was engineered by James Brindley and opened in 1777 from Derwent Mouth (one mile from here) to Preston Brook, where it joined the Bridgewater Canal to lock down to the Mersey at Runcorn.
