Text Appearing Before Image:
, he did 50 TEUE BEAK STOEIES. not want Mountain Joe to stay at homeor keep sober. He wanted to handle allthe money and answer no questions. Adrunken man and a boy that he could bullysuited him best. Ah, but this man Reesewas a mean fellow, as has been said a timeor two before. As winter came on the two blacks werefat as pigs and fully half-grown. Their ap-petites increased daily, and so did theanger and envy of Mr. Sil Reese. Theyll eat us out o house and hum, said the big, towering nose one day, as thesnow began to descend and close up thepack trails. And then the stingy man pro-posed that the blacks should be made tohibernate, as others of their kind. Therewas a big, hollow log*that had been sawedoff in joints to make bee gums; and thestingy man insisted that they should beput in there with a tight head, and a packof hay for a bed, and nailed up till springto save provisions. Soon there was an Indian outbreak.
Text Appearing After Image:
The boy had grown some. — Page 52. TWIN BABIES. 51 Some one from the ranch, or hotel, mustgo with the company of volunteers thatwas forming down at the post for a wintercampaign. Of course Eeese would not go.He wanted Mountain Joe to go and getkilled. But Joe was sober now and hewanted to stay and watch Keese. And that is how it came about that thetwo black babies were tumbled headlonginto a big, black bee gum, or short, hollowlog, on a heap of hay, and nailed up forthe winter. The boy had to go to the war. It was late in the spring when the boy, having neglected to get himself killed, tothe great disgust of Mr. Sil Reese, rodedown and went straight up to the big blackbee gum in the back yard. He put his earto a knothole. Not a sound. He tetheredhis mule, came back and tried to shake theshort, hollow log. Not a sound or sign ormovement of any kind. Then he kicked thebig black gum with all his might. Nothing.Rushing to the wood-pile, he caught upan ax and in a moment had the whole end
