Summary[edit]
| Description |
English: Truman's Brewery chimney and clocktower Brewing began here in the late C17. Huguenot refugees started the practice of using fermented hops with great success. Sir Benjamin Truman was responsible for building the Black Horse brewery in early C18 and it remained in the family for 200 years or so, providing jobs for the local population. Trumans was known as a benevolent employer who offered its employees schooling for their children and other benefits.
The brewery finally closed in 1888 and is now a 'cultural venue' with shops, exhibition areas and eating/drinking places. |
