The Petrel has an official speed of 25 knots, though it is probably closer to 30. In June 2008 it was involved in the search for a missing plane off of the coast of San Diego. Additionally, in October 2009 the Petral searched for the wreckage of a C-130 airplane and Marine Corps AH-1W helicopter that collided near San Clemente, California.
