Description
English: Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) begin checking in civilians for a tiger cruise from San Francisco back to the ship’s homeport of San Diego. Tiger cruises allow crewmembers an opportunity to bring family and friends on board for a short underway period. The program is designed to strengthen family ties and increase awareness and appreciation for the Navy and its mission through personal interaction and experience. America was recently commissioned during San Francisco Fleet Week 2014 and is the first ship of its class and the fourth to bear the name. She replaces the Tarawa-class of amphibious assault ship as the next generation “big-deck” amphibious assault ship and is optimized for aviation and capable of supporting current and future aircraft such as the MV-22 Osprey and F-35B Joint Strike Fighter.
