English: PEARL HARBOR (July 23, 2009) Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, commander, Submarine Force U.S. Pacific Fleet, discusses the various aspects of the Virginia-class attack submarine USS Hawaii (SSN 776) with Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle during the arrival ceremony for Hawaii. Hawaii is the first Virginia-class submarine homeported in the Pacific and the first submarine to bear the name of the Aloha state. Recognizing the importance of the Asia-Pacific region, the 2006 Quadrennial Defense Review mandated that 60 percent of the U.S. Navy submarines be home ported in the Pacific. By the end of 2009, 31 of the 53 fast attack submarines will be home ported in the Pacific, with 18 of those 31 home ported in Pearl Harbor.
