Summary
[edit]DescriptionUrochloa mosambicensis spikelet12 annotated - Flickr - Macleay Grass Man.jpg | Introduced, warm-season, perennial, hairy, C4 grass; stems grow to 1 m tall. Leaf sheaths have spreading tubercle-based hairs, rarely almost glabrous; ligules are membranous with ciliate margins and 1.5–2 mm long; blades are to 11 mm wide, with tubercle-based hairs on the lower surface, less hairy on the upper surface. Flowerheads are a primary axis of racemes; racemes number 3–7 and are 2–6 cm long and spikelets are moderately densely arranged. Spikelets are usually 4–5 mm long, solitary or in pairs, 1 pedicel of each pair frequently almost suppressed, bearing a perfect or variously, often greatly reduced spikelet. Lower glume is 50–75% as long as the spikelet, usually with 1–3 stiff hairs on the midnerve in the upper 50%; upper glume is equal to the spikelet's length. Lower lemma is male, fringed with hairs and mucronate or shortly awned. Upper lemma is fertile, finely ridged and has an awn 0.5–1 mm long. Flowers in summer. A native of Africa, it is a naturalised pasture species that hasn't been recorded in the Hunter Valley before or been recorded this far south. |
