  • Significance: The structure is a one room dugout which was excavated into the lower slope of the south side of the valley of Horse Thief Draw approximately 1 mile northwest of Superior. The dugout is rectangular in shape with the long axis running from north to south. The overall dimensions are 4 feet 12 inches north to south by 8 feet 7 inches east to west. The dugout is divided into two portions. To the north is an entry passage permitting access to the dugout and a single room. The entryway is a narrow passage lined with stacked dry laid uncut sandstone slabs on both the east and west sides. The passageway is 6 feet 3 inches long. At the south end of the passage is a single subterranean room. A single opening in the north wall of this room permits access to this room. The door has been removed. The room is rectangular in shape with the long axis running from north to south. The room measures 8 feet 8 inches by 7 feet 8 inches with the height varying from 4 feet 5 inches at the north end to 5 feet 4 inches at the south end. The north walls of this room consist of milled lumber planking extending from the floor to the roof. The west, south, and east walls consist of three courses of horizontal 8 inch x 8 inch milled lumber beams resting on 2 feet 11 inches of earth. A wooden shelf runs the length of the east wall. The shelf consists of a single milled lumber board 8 inches wide and 8 feet 6 inches long. It is 3 feet above the floor.
