It was discovered inwestern Bliotan in 1S37 by AVilliam (Jritflth whose enormous collectionof herbarium specimens lay buried for many years in the cellars of 396 LAKIX GKIFFITHII. the old East India House in Liadciiliall Street, so tliat this Larchremained unknown to science till it Mas rediscover(;d by Sir -losephHooker in Sikkini in 1848, and who sent seeds to the Royal Gardensat Kew, which germinated freely and the seedlings were widelydistributed but nearly all idtimately succumbed either to climate ordisease. Repeated importations of seeds since, have met with nobetter fate.
