Description

Victor M. Landreth Letter, 7 June 1919 was written at the one year anniversary of the Battle of Belleau Wood and describes Victor Landreth's emotions and experiences of going "across the wheat field towards the woods." Landreth recounts the attack and capture of the Woods to include when the "fireworks started and the 5th Marines went over the top" on 6 June; the 72 hour long "Boche" artillery barrage on Bouresches; the devastating effectiveness of the German machine gun fire; and the capture of the woods on 26 June. In addition to his activities, Landreth included descriptions of his physical and mental condition (fatigue) and the juxtaposition of a once "serene and untroubled landscape" with one filled with dead and dying combatants. Comparing the intensity of combat at St. Michiel, Soissons and Argonne, Landreth stated "i don't believe there was any harder fighting in this ... than Belleau Woods."

The Battle of Belleau Woods took an emotional and physical toll on those that participated as is indicated by the way Landreth concluded the letter. He wrote "I fell remarkably breezy today. We have been thinking considerably about it yesterday and today and I wanted to get it off my mind. I was figuring on being able to tell you about it but from the looks of things now I might forget some of the details and the scenery. I guess it isn't a very nice story but it wasn't a nice job and I just kind of wanted to tell somebody..."
