Summary

[edit]
Description
English: View across Ridley Bottom towards Little Wood, New Forest. This path crosses Ridley Bottom and climbs up to Little Wood on Ridley Plain. The area is associated with 18th century smuggling activities, and Ridley Wood (off to the right) was apparently a favoured meeting place for smugglers to do business. Picket Post is off to the left, a place where supposedly a "picket" of soldiers was posted to try and deal with the nearby smuggling activities - this track would have been too conspicuous for the smugglers to use, and their "Smuggler's Road" crosses the bottom at a ford further to the south before entering Ridley Wood.
