Summary
[edit]DescriptionView of Honolulu in 1857.jpg |
English: View of Queen Street, Honolulu in 1856, showing at left, Hudson's Bay store, and at right work begun on the demolition of fort wall erected in 1816; and beyond, the facade of the old legislative hall, where, in 1874, on the occasion of the election of David Kalakaua as king, a riot ensued and the interior was wrecked by his opponents. Also in the distance is the Kawaiahaʻo Church. From Dr. Stangenwald's photograph of a limited-run lithograph in the collection of Aaron Waterhouse. The lithograph was based on the painting Queen Street, Honolulu 1856 by George Henry Burgess (b.1831 d.1905), which is in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. |
