Description

De ‘Glendallough Sea Stallion’ (Zeehengst) is de grootste replica van een Vikingschip ooit ter wereld gemaakt. Op 1 juli 2007 is het schip met een bemanning van 65 koppen begonnen aan een reis ‘in het voetspoor van de Vikingen’ van Roskilde naar Dublin. Het originele Vikingschip was door de Vikingen in 1042 in Ierland gebouwd. Het originele schip heeft zo’n 950 jaar op de bodem gelegen van Roskilde fjord. Daar was het samen met enkele andere Vikingschepen tot zinken gebracht om de nauwe doorvaart te blokkeren. Het origineel is nu te zien in de Viking Ship Hall te Roskilde (Denemarken).

Gezien omvang en geschiedenis is het zeer wel denkbaar dat het oorlogsschip een rol heeft gespeeld in de strijd om de troon van Engeland en in de gebeurtenissen die later hebben geleid tot de slag bij Hastings in 1066, het markeerpunt van het einde van het tijdperk van de Vikingen.
