English: WWII coastal defences. This extensive construction is situated by the clifftop carpark > 969505 at the start of a steep footpath to the beach > 969469. It was built in 1940/41 from concrete and steel and is part of what is believed to be the only surviving 6 inch battery from WW2. Except for the covers of the gun platforms > 969522 it is completely intact. Forming part of the coastal crust defences, it was manned by 197 Battery RA, and armed with 2 x MK XVI ex-naval 6 inch guns which had been removed by 1946. Defence of Britain database reference no S0000929. |
