Text Appearing Before Image:
is lost, a six-legged,well-braced base of the Windsor type could beadapted to fit such a piece nicely. This re- mark applies particularly of course to the oldmaple or white wood or cherry flat-top high-boys. The base would have the usual solidframe like a chair, but twice as long, and athinned edge. Curly Maple Pieces of curly maple like comb-back chairs,to be finished in a natural, that is, very lightcolor are very handsome. Such pieces areavailable only that more difficulty is found inmatching the wood nicely. The finish in the antique or a rich brownis much sought for, but many discerning peoplewill wish a lighter, brighter finish, allowingage to give the mellow brown. It is difficult without undue expense, to findbirds-eye maple, but it can be done. Weadvise that the curly maple is desirable, butthe birds-eye is more proper for cabinetpieces. Birch is often used for chair legs, and, if itis properly seasoned, it is durable and hand-some. It is not quite so hard as rockmaple. (12)
Text Appearing After Image:
No. 440No. 440. Pennsylvania Writing-arm Windsor This piece is a little wider than the Northerntype of writing chair on page 27. The seat is25 inches wide, with an opening for entrance14 inches wide. The table is 18 inches wide. There are nine spindles in the comb, as inthe usual Pennsylvania arm Windsor. Thischair is suited for large persons. One alwaysfaces the table in entering. It is provided, in variants whose numbers follow, with various fixtures. The chair shownlias none of them. No. 441 lias an ink well sunk in table. No. 442 has a candle slide which secures thedrawer. No. 443 has both candle slide and ink well. This chair will be handsomer with a highercomb, just like that on page 7, and will usuallybe in that better form. (13)
