s College, 1904. After leaving college he entered the firm of Bear, Morgan &Co., bankers, New York City, which firm is now known as Kidder,Peabody & Company. He is manager of the Foreign ExchangeDepartment of that company. In October, 1917, he was called for service in the Food Admin-istration, and for some time acted as general assistant to Mr.Whitmarsh and Mr. Ackerly. The readiness with which hegrasped distributive problems soon made it possible to entrust tohim greater responsibilities, and after Mr. Ackerlys retiremento\ving to ill health in April, 1918, Mr. Williams was made headof the wholesale section of the Distribution Division. It was with the greatest regret that the other members of thedivision saw his departure on August 27th, 1918, for active servicein the United States Army, but Mr. Williams patriotic fervorwas such as not to be denied, and the early termination of thewar alone prevented his service in France. His business address is 17 Wall St., New York City.

227 THEODORE FRANCIS WHITMARSH Theodore Francis Whitmarsh, Vice President and Treasurer ofFrancis H. Leggett & Company, was born in Brooklyn, N. Y.,November 6th, 1869, the son of Henry C. and Caroline H.(Leggett) Whitmarsh. After a common school education he began his business careerin 1886 with his uncle, the late Francis H. Leggett, and workinghis way through the various departments was admitted to mem-bership in the firm in 1896, becoming its Vice President and Treas-urer when the firm was incorporated in 1902. On the death of Mr.Leggett in 1909 he assumed the active management of the busi-ness. Besides this connection he is President and Treasurer of theSeacoast Canning Company and Treasurer of the American CanCompany of Maine. He is a Director of the Irving National Bankand the Irving Trust Company, of the Famous Players LaskyCompany, a Trustee of the Greenwich Savings Bank and a di-rector of the United States Chamber of Commerce.
