Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Weir and lake on the Seiont above Crawia. This weir was constructed in the 1880s to form a sufficient head of water to feed a leat flowing middle left to the Crawia Slate Mill. This was one of two such works in the gorge between Ponrhythallt and the hamlet of Crawia. The other was the Pontrhythallt Slate Works. Both produced writing slates for schools and both closed in the 1920s. Even so, in the 1940s, we kids at Ysgol Deiniolen, rarely saw paper and learnt to write on slates using a 'carreg nadd' (lit. a carving stone). Such slates were always cleaned by the age-old spit and sleeve method which, today, would give the H&S people apoplexy. .
