Summary[edit]
DescriptionWell Creek flowing through the Mullicourt Aqueduct - geograph.org.uk - 1261770.jpg |
English: Well Creek flowing through the Mullicourt Aqueduct The Mullicourt Aqueduct, so called after a nearby priory of which nothing remains, carries the Well Creek over Middle Level Drain - its steel trough and the adjoining main sluice were installed in 1921. Well Creek once was the main course of the River Nene and a tributary of the River great Ouse, until its diversion from Peterborough to Wisbech in 1946. The Mullicourt Aqueduct is the only navigable aqueduct in East Anglia.
The sluice gate seen at right was installed in 1921, replacing older equipment. The Main Drain was cut in 1848 to allow lowering of the levels in the Middle Drain and the drainage of the surrounding land for cultivation. In order to preserve the higher level in the Well Creek, the Mullicourt Aqueduct (and a lock at Marmont Priory) were built, thus preserving the important commercial navigation link through Upwell and Outwell and onwards to Peterborough. The water level in Well Creek is more than 2 metres above that in the Main Drain. |
