Summary
[edit]DescriptionWestbury-on-Severn church belltower - geograph.org.uk - 1418014.jpg |
English: Detached belltower and spire of SS Peter, Paul and Mary's parish church, Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. Built in 1290, it was as a defensive tower against raids by the Welsh. The wooden spire was added in the 14th century and is more than 150ft (49m) high. It is covered with more than 35,000 wooden shingles. When it was damaged by storms in the 17th century, it was repaired using wood from cider casks. |
