Summary
[edit]DescriptionWhittinghame Church in the Parish of Traprain - geograph.org.uk - 1291571.jpg |
English: Whittinghame Church in the Parish of Traprain. The present church at Whittinghame (pron. with soft g and silent h) was greatly rebuilt in 1722 on the site of a church erected in 1225 to replace a 7th century church, at nearby Luggate Burn, dedicated by St. Cuthbert, the Apostle of the Lothians. Many famous men have been laid to rest in this historic place including the 1st Earl Balfour of Whittinghame, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The battlements of this fine church are reminiscent more of churches in Dorset and Somerset, stand aloft on high ground in the tiny parish. It is situated near Whitinghame House and the 16th century Tower. For image and description, see Lisa Jarvis' fine submission at 425372 |
