I bought this Chaenomeles from a local garden centre a couple of weeks back and just put it, in its pot, amongst the other stock plants and things to plant out. I had noticed that it was suffering a bit from lack of water but made sure it got a good old skoosh every time i watered the things around it. Yesterday i noticed that it was getting worse. I took it out of its pot and found that all but the top inch was completely dry - a solid mass of dusty peat and completely water repellent. Whereas if any of my plants, in my (almost) peat free mix (I use 30% J.I. compost in my mix which has some peat) dry out I can water them a bit extra and they take it up immediately, peat grown plants, once dry, stay dry, unless you stick them in a bucket of water. And how is a plant grown like this supposed to make the transition to ordinary garden soil? No wonder so many people have disappointing results with garden centre plants. I can imagine why the growers with their automated watering systems like it but for the ordinary gardener it really is horrible stuff. |
