Text Appearing Before Image:
els.The unhappy girl drownsherself, and Gennaro, in anabandon of remorse and de-spair, places the jewels on analtar, prays for mercy, anddrives a dagger into his heart. As the people, bent on ven-geance, burst into the room, they see the body of the un-fortunate youth lying beforethe Madonna. The two intermezzi are de-lightful examples of the ex-quisite music which Wolf-Ferrari has written for thiswork. One is the beautifulwaltz intermezzo between thesecond and third acts, and theother, an effective numbermainly for harp, flute andstrings, is played before Act II.The beautiful Serenade occurs in the second act of the opera. The scene is the gardenof Maliellas house. It is evening, and from the distance are heard the strains of an oldNeapolitan folk ballad, sung by a chorus afloat on the bay. This is succeeded by thetinkling of mandolins and guitars behind the wall of Maliellas garden. Rafaele and hiscompanions appear, and he sings his Serenade, which begins: Aprila bella la fenestrella.
