KABINDA LADY: WEST AFRICA.Drawn by Norman H, Hardy THE \\EST COAST OF AFRICA 335 hundred north and south ; there, too, arc theMendi, the Gora, and the Vai, and otherMohammedanised peoples, who are char-acterised by ample clothing ; beyond themare the Kru, famous as the boatmen ofWest Africa, and, like sailors elsewhere, inthe past if not in the present, lovers ofstrong drink ; with the Grebo and other oftheir neighbours they are characterised byan almost complete absence of clothing,and the costume of a Kru maiden is oftenno more than a string of beads with a tinybeadwork square of leather or cloth infront. Between the Kru and the Mandingoof the backlands come the Kpwesi, of whomlittle is known ; and intermingled with theMandingo are the important Fula people,also Mohammedan, a cross perhaps betweenthe negro and Libyan invaders in the dimprehistoric period, and themselves givingbirth, it may be, by further crossing, to thealready mentioned Mandingo.
