| Description |
English: Wood Ants' nest in Pound Wood nature reserve, Benfleet Wood Ants' nests are a prominent feature of many ancient woodlands in Essex. They are one of Britain's largest ants and are important predators on caterpillars and other insects. Although common here, they are rare in the UK and Europe. This is a moderately-sized heap, around a metre across and 40cm high. They can get up to a metre high, and a metre-and-a half across.
