Common name: Mayflower, Flame Tree, Royal Poinciana, Peacock Flower, Gulmohar गुलमोहर (Hindi) Botanical name: Delonix regia - [ (dee-LON-iks) or (DEE-loh-niks) from the Greek delos (conspicuous) and onux (claw), referring to the long-clawed petals; (REE-jee-uh) royal ] Synonyms: Caesalpinia regia, Poinciana regia Family: Caesalpiniaceae - [ (Seez-al-pin-ee-uh--see-ay) from the generic name Caesalpinia ] Origin: Madagascar I know this flower as Mayflower. And it is one of my favourite flower. Until last year, I have observed that its first bloom of the season is unfailingly in the last week of April, as much as 29th or 30th of April. And in the month of May, the tree is set on fire by these red-orange flowers. During the day as sun rises overhead, the colour seems to increase its intensity so much so that from a distance the trees seem to be in flames - very simply - a matter of one's perception. In the first week of June, with the first shower of monsoon, these MAYFLOWERS bid goodbye. This year 2007, I was surprised to see them appearing in the middle of January, on a tree in my neighbourhood. There was no sign of them on any other trees that I could see in other parts of Thane or Mumbai.
